A good setup should disappear into the background. You should be able to focus on the task, the game, or the conversation—not on a shoulder creeping upward or the urge to lean toward the screen.
Ergonomics is not a hunt for one “perfect” pose. It is a way to arrange your tools so the positions you use most are easy to reach and easy to vary. Start with the chair, then let the desk, keyboard, mouse, monitor, and lighting follow. This guide gives you a repeatable sequence for a home office, hybrid desk, or gaming station.
Back supported, feet supported, and room to sit all the way back.
Directly ahead, with the top at or slightly below eye level.
Close enough for relaxed shoulders and straight, unstrained wrists.
In the same easy-reach zone as the keyboard—no repeated reaching.
Start with the chair, not the monitor
Set the chair before you touch the screen. Sit back so the backrest and any lumbar cushion meet your lower back rather than your mid-back. Then adjust the seat height until your feet are supported on the floor and your thighs are not being pressed by the front edge of the seat. If raising the chair is what brings your arms level with the desk, a footrest is usually the more useful fix than hovering your feet.
EU-OSHA’s computer-workstation guidance puts the same priority on a chair that supports the back, legs, buttocks, and arms while helping reduce awkward posture. Its setup checklist also calls for feet flat on the floor, lower-back support, relaxed shoulders, and elbows close to the body. Those are useful checkpoints, not a demand to freeze in one position. For the visual setup in this guide, we used the Dowinx Leather Sofa Chair LS-66BG101 Black in black. Its 90°–135° recline range can be useful for changing posture between focused blocks, but the adjustment order remains the same for any chair: establish support first, then make the desk fit you.
Then bring the work to you
Once the chair feels settled, bring the keyboard and mouse into your primary work zone: close enough that your elbows can remain near your sides. If the keyboard is too far away, it is common to slide forward and lose back support. If it is too high, shoulders tend to rise; if it is too low, wrists can bend upward. A keyboard tray, an adjustable desk, or a modest chair-height change can solve different versions of the same problem.
Keep the mouse beside the keyboard rather than beyond it. You should be able to move from one to the other without repeatedly reaching from the shoulder. EU-OSHA specifically recommends placing the keyboard directly in front, keeping shoulders relaxed, elbows near the body, and wrists in line with the forearms. Read the keyboard-placement guidance.
Put the monitor in the right conversation
Your monitor should serve your neck, not pull it into a new angle. Start with the screen directly in front of you. As a practical first pass, set the top of the display at or a little below eye level, then adjust distance and tilt so you can read comfortably without leaning in. For a larger display, or if you wear bifocals, a lower position can be more comfortable.

Adapt the rules to the way you actually work
A laptop is the most common exception to an otherwise tidy setup. When its built-in screen is your main display, lifting the screen to a comfortable height also lifts the keyboard. The practical answer is usually to separate the two jobs: raise the laptop on a stable stand and use an external keyboard and mouse. If you only work from the laptop occasionally, choose the compromise that matters most for that session, then take a movement break sooner rather than trying to force every element into place.
For two screens, put the one you use most directly in front of you and place the secondary display close beside it. If you use both equally, center the gap between them rather than twisting toward one screen for hours. For gaming, bring the monitor and primary input devices close enough that you are not reaching into the desk; a controller can rest in the same central zone when it is the active tool. In each case, the principle is the same: arrange the things you use repeatedly so they are the things you do not have to reach for.
Lighting deserves the same practical treatment. If a window or lamp reflects on the display, you may unconsciously crane your neck or lean forward to find a clearer angle. Rotate the desk or monitor before turning screen brightness into the only solution. EU-OSHA recommends arranging the workstation to limit glare from windows, desk lamps, and overhead lighting; placing strong window light at a right angle to the screen can help. Use armrests as support, not as a steering wheel
Armrests work best when they lightly support the forearms without forcing your shoulders upward or pushing you too far from the desk. If they contact the desk edge or block you from getting close enough to the keyboard, lower them, move them out of the way if possible, or leave them unused for that task. The goal is not to make every control “active”; it is to remove the reason you would have to reach, shrug, or perch forward.
Do a contact-point check before you begin: feet supported, hips back in the chair, lower back supported, shoulders unshrugged, forearms relaxed, wrists not bent sharply, and eyes able to meet the screen without tipping the head. Change one variable at a time. That makes it much easier to feel which adjustment is helping. Take a quick photo from the side if you cannot tell whether the screen, elbows, and back support are lining up.
Build around your routine, not a product spec sheet.

Make room for movement
A carefully arranged workstation is still only one part of the day. Your most comfortable setup will let you shift easily between tasks and positions. A brief pause to stand, refill water, look away from the screen, or change your chair angle can be a practical reset between concentrated blocks. EU-OSHA’s evaluation checklist encourages organizing computer tasks to allow micro-breaks or recovery pauses. Review the workstation checklist.
Use a recline as a change of position, not as a replacement for a break. A gentle recline can take pressure off a static upright posture while you read, think, or take a short call. When it is time to type or aim precisely, return to a position that keeps you close to the keyboard and monitor.
Your eight-minute ergonomic setup sequence

Clear the immediate desk area.
Put the keyboard, mouse, and primary screen where they can sit directly in front of you. Move chargers, notebooks, and other occasional items outside that central zone.

Set seat height and support.
Plant your feet. Sit back. Use a footrest if the desk height makes a supported chair position leave your feet dangling.

Match the keyboard to your elbows.
Bring it close; allow shoulders to relax; keep wrists generally in line with the forearms. Reposition the mouse alongside it.

Set the screen last.
Center it, then tune height, distance, and tilt until your head can stay balanced over your torso while reading.

Run a 30-second reset check.
Notice your shoulders, jaw, feet, and lower back. If one area feels like it is doing extra work, make a small adjustment and reassess rather than changing everything at once.
